Take a step back

The traffic was sparse on the highway that day. I was cruising along lazily when I spotted an event unfolding in front of me. A heavy vehicle moved from the one of the fast lanes to slow lane, and started reducing it’s speed - presumably for an imminent turn or a stop. A sedan travelling in the slow lane, noticed the truck late, went close behind it and was repeatedly honking to speed up. The driver was visibly agitated, waving his hands in frustration.

“Why can’t the sedan slow down, shift to the fast lane, and go on his way?" I mused as I followed and observed these vehicles from a distance. “When the other lanes are clear, why is he concerned about the slowing vehicle in front of him?"

Slowly, I realized that he is not seeing the same picture as me. I could see the entire road, including the free lanes, from a few metres behind, whereas the sedan’s driver could see only the back of the truck. I quickly sped past both of them and went on my way.

When I was thinking about what to write for the Sunday morning blog article, I remembered the incident described above.

Life is like travelling on the highway. All one wants to do is to cruise along in an empty road in nice weather, while listening to delightful music.

Sure, some days are going to be like that!

But that’s not going to happen every day. Obstacles and issues will arise from time to time, like the truck on the highway. Trucks come in a variety of sizes and shapes, just like the hurdles in life’s road. Some would be easy to cross, while others would need some effort.

And then, there are those from which you cannot find a way around or figure a way out. Like if you had hit a dead end. Like if you had crossed a point of no return.

When that happens, take a moment to think.

Are you too close to the problem? Too close to the issues you are facing?

Too close that you are missing the bigger picture? Too close that you fail to spot the easy way out.

*Take a few steps back. Look at the bigger picture. Maybe, just maybe, there is an easy way out, hidden in plain sight.*
